Not the homecoming he wanted

When Badgers quarterback Dustin Sherer looked at what would be his senior year, he was hoping to be the starter. Obviously, after starting the last 7 games of his junior year in 2008, he slipped a bit. A lot, in fact, all the way down to the number 3 spot on the depth chart.

Sherer is a native of Indiana, hailing from the small town of Cicero. His brother also plays for the Hoosiers football team. So what might have been a nice return home during his senior year leading the Badgers, will not be. He was fortunate to do so last year in a blowout victory, but this year he is more a coach than a player.

Bret Bielema has been highly complimentary of Sherer’s work helping Tolzien and Phillips and coaching may be Sherer’s future. But this weekend his role will be to help his fellow quarterbacks. So while he may not be seen throwing the ball in the game, Sherer still hopes to contribute to a team win in his final homecoming.

Bucks Savior?

Savior of the Bucks

Sorry to call out our sports department intern, but before Brandon Jennings ever played a game for Milwaukee, our intern was calling the Bucks’ rookie point guard a bust.

Now, you can never judge a kid this early, but after 3 games, the only way this Jennings is a bust is if he ruptures his achilles and rips apart both knees. The young man can flat play.

Not too many fans knew much about him other than he skipped out the token year of college to play in Europe after high school.

Well, 3 geames in he’s averaging 22 points a game and nearly had a triple-double in his debut. Not to mention, he’s highly entertaining. Behind the back passes, crazy dribbling skills. He makes the Bucks watchable. That is no small feat.

Obviously, it is too early to call this kid the next Oscar Robertson, but I believe he passes the eyeball test on not being a bust.

Fun to speculate

OK.. let’s play the “what if” game.  What if the Badger football team won out?  What if Wisconsin, who was expected to be mediocre at best this season, really finishes 10-2 in the regular season and plays in the Outback Bowl and beats a solid SEC team like Auburn.  What if Bret Bielema, who was on the hot seat to start the season, coaches a very young Badgers team to an 11-2 record?  Where would the Badgers, who bring nearly everyone back next season, be ranked to start the year?  Probably top-ten!  WHAT IF?!  It’s fun to speculate.

Hot Seat Reversal

Who would’ve thought that just a couple months into the football season Bret Bielema’s job would become secure and Mike McCarthy would be sitting on the hot seat?  Not me.  The Packers looked all-world in the preseason.  Their 3-4 defense seemed to be a quick fix to many of last season’s problems.  Aaron Rodgers and the offense appeared to be rolling.  Meanwhile the Badgers were coming in off a terrible 7-6 season and they were one of the youngest teams in the Big Ten.  There were so many question marks about this team that began with the QB position.  Who the heck was Scott Tolzien anyway?  Some UW “fans” were hoping for another down season just so Bielema would get the axe.  Hmm.. where are those fans now.  Just admit it.  Bielema’s prepared this young team for a bright season and an even brighter future.  Meanwhile McCarthy’s play-calling is questionable at best and he and Ted Thompson should have drafted a stud offensive lineman when they had the chance.  Did they really NEED Jordy Nelson anyway?  Add to the fact that Brett Favre returned to beat the Packers twice already.. and this has certainly turned into a nightmare first half of the 2009 season for McCarthy.  But don’t fret Wisconsin fans.  At least we’ve got the Badgers!  My prediction?  A 10-2 season and a trip to the Outback Bowl to face Auburn or Tennessee.  Tampa looks nice in late December!

Revenge complete

In his first game against his former team, Brett Favre became the first QB in NFL history to beat all 32 NFL teams.  He threw 3 TD’s and no interceptions.  Today he throws 4 TD’s and no picks.  If there was any need for revenge (and you had to figure there was), Favre certainly got it.  He has officially stuck it to Ted Thompson.  As a Packers fan, it was a sick scene to see Favre jumping around on Lambeau Field in a Vikings uniform after throwing his 4th TD today.  Will everyone just move on from the Favre saga?  Is it complete for Favre now?  Not even close.  He will continue to relish the chance to stick it to Ted Thompson.  Every game Favre plays is, in some ways, a game against Thompson.  This much is certain.  Favre and the Vikings are in great shape for a Super run this season… and that’s got to make Thompson sick to his stomach.

Sack masters

The Vikings defensive line is destroying Green Bay’s offensive line.  Aaron Rodgers has been sacked 3 times already — it’s early in the 2nd quarter.  Jarred Allen just ran right through T.J. Lang.  The Vikings sacked Rodgers 8 times in the Metrodome back on October 5th.

Dumb Johnny Jolly

Wow.  Just an absolutely stupid personal foul by Johnny Jolly has given the Vikings life.  Jolly headbutted Chester Taylor after the play was over.  So instead of 4th down and a sure FG attempt, the Vikings ran it in on 4th and goal from the one.  7-3 Vikings on top.  DUMB JOHNNY JOLLY!!!!

Packers take lead

Thanks to a fumbled snap by the Vikings, the Packers score first.  The Packers offense hasn’t done much, but they turned the turnover into a Mason Crosby fieldgoal.  3-0 Packers lead.  But Percy Harvin just ran the kickoff return inside the Packers 20.  And a stupid personal foul by Johnny Jolly — he headbutted Chester Taylor after the play was over.  So Vikings have 2nd and goal from 10.

BOO!

No, that boo you hear is not for Halloween.  It’s the reaction from the fans at Lambeau Field.  Anyone who thought it would be a 50-50 cheer vs. boo crowd when Brett Favre ran out onto Lambeau Field is wrong.  Favre has been constantly booed everytime he touches the ball.

But wait!  Finally some cheers for Favre because he and the Vikings just fumbled the snap!  Packers driving thanks to the big mistake by Favre and the Vikings.

Big Win for Bucky

Leaving the press box now, very impressive performance by the Badgers today. It will be interesting to see what Coach Bielema says in his post game presser.

You would have to think he would be very complmentary of his whole team after thier best performance of the year.
